Windowsill Garden Activity
You don’t need a big plot of dirt to grow veggies. A window pot or box (or margarine container, in this case) will do the trick!
Lettuce is a great crop to grow with children. It grows well in a container, and matures in 3 - 4 weeks! The children can be involved from seed to table! Here’s how:
You Will Need:
· One 2 lb margarine container, with lid, per person
· Hammer and nail
· Pebbles, rocks or marbles
· Potting soil
· Mixed lettuce seeds
How To Do It:
1. You will need an empty 2 lb margarine container and lid to plant in. Using the hammer and nail, punch 5 holes in each container for drainage. Children can help with the rest of the steps.
2. Have your child add rocks, pebbles or marbles in the bottom of the container to help with drainage. Add the potting soil. Make sure the container is on top of its lid. Then water the soil to make it damp.
3. Your child can sprinkle a few of the mixed lettuce seeds on top of the moist soil, then sprinkle a little potting soil on top of the seeds. Water again to moisten the top layer.
4. Place the containers on a window sill in a west or south facing window, and watch it grow! Be sure to water your garden a little every other day!
