return to food security
Community gardens are places where several people come together to grow their own food in a centralized community location. Typically, each gardener works their own plot to plant and grow produce while contributing to common goals of the shared space as established by the garden members. Community gardens are especially valuable in areas with high density housing, and may provide the only gardening space available in the area.
Prince George now has three community gardens a public allotment style garden with 30-40 rental plots, an agency-based garden where agencies work together to provide gardening opportunities for their clients, and the Community Garden at AiMHi where everyone is welcome to enjoy the garden.
Queensway Garden is an inter-agency, and public allotment, community garden operated in Prince George.
Agency based community gardens are unique projects that address immediate food needs while empowering individuals to access healthy foods through community projects like community kitchens or gardens. Agencies can support their clients, sometimes the most food insecure people in the community, to make change in their lives through coordinated client-centered programming. Agencies often bring clients to the garden as part of normal programming, and support them in gardening, teaching and learning skills side by side.
The garden also offers a number of individual plots for rent each season. You must be a member of the garden to harvest – you pick what you plant!
You should be able to arrange with the garden representative from that agency to participate in agency based gardening. Each agency has guidelines for participants to follow, and all gardeners are required to sign a formal gardening agreement.
Yes! The Queensway Garden has a number of private rental plots available for $10 per season, and volunteer hours. Plots are 10 feet x 20 feet. Call Pat at 250-563-0858 for information or to rent a plot.
I work at an Agency that might be interested in gardening here as part of client programs. How can I find out more about the garden and partner responsibilities? We are always looking for partner agencies, since these agencies help to create sustainability of the garden.

First, you can rent a plot and garden for a season! If you are not able to commit to a plot rental, we are always looking for volunteers, tools in good condition, any gardening supplies (string, stakes, lumber, gloves, seeds, buckets), and often we have specific needs that change from season to season.
